What to Compare in This Category
When you weigh one unit in this category against another, these are the factors that decide it:
- MERV
- pressure drop
- cabinet fit
- filter capacity
- replacement cost
- blower impact
Sizing
Capacity must come from a Manual J load calculation for the building, not from floor area alone. An oversized unit short-cycles, leaves humidity in the air and wears its components faster; an undersized one runs continuously and still misses setpoint on design days. Treat the 600 CFM figure above as one point on the range this category covers, not as a recommendation for your home.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation quality has more effect on delivered performance than the difference between two nameplate efficiency ratings. Confirm venting, clearances, refrigerant charge or water temperature, and duct or line-set design with a licensed contractor before purchase.
Verify Before You Buy
Check the certified rating for the exact model number in the AHRI or HVI directory, and confirm current ENERGY STAR status on energystar.gov. Ratings quoted in marketing material often apply to a specific indoor/outdoor combination rather than the outdoor unit alone.
